UCD were crowned winners of the 3rd Annual Great Agri-Food debate, organised by Dawn Meats and McDonald’s Ireland, as students from five third level colleges gathered in Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT). The event has become a key date in the college calendar for agriculture students with a growing number of teams competing this year and ambitious plans to expand further in 2019.

Throughout the day teams from Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT), University College Dublin (UCD), University College Cork (UCC), Cork Institute of Technology and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) debated key topics for the Irish agriculture industry including; Brexit, consumer behaviour and sustainability and CAP.

The event culminated in a heated and well-informed debate between UCD and CIT on the motion “Ireland takes its environmental responsibilities and commitments seriously.” 

UCD, supporting the motion argued that Ireland’s reputation all around the world as a green, environmentally conscious producer is evidence that the country has embraced the environmental challenge. They argued that targets alone are not a measure of whether Ireland takes its environmental responsibility seriously. The team also flagged the many ways in which Ireland has been an innovator, from Croke Park’s designation as the first carbon neutral stadium in the world, to the introduction of the BER scheme and the way that Ireland is leading the world in passive design. 

CIT argued that Ireland has failed to “walk the walk” on its environmental responsibilities time and time again, and that the country continues to choose the economy over the environment. They put it to the audience that going green costs money, money that Ireland doesn’t have. They also referred to the recent coverage of plastic waste in the form of disposable coffee cups, and questioned why these cannot be banned sooner than 2030.

It is great to be in Waterford Institute of Technology for the third year of the Great Agri-food debate. Through the debates today, we have touched on many of the most pertinent issues facing farmers and food producers in Ireland. The sustainability challenge is one that is particularly close to our hearts in Dawn Meats.  We have ambitious 2025 targets to reduce water and energy intensity by 40% and CO2 emission intensity by 50% and we aspire to become Europe’s most sustainable meat company in the process. The students have provided great food for thought today on fulfilling that commitment.”

The quarter final saw UCC take on CIT on the impact of Brexit on the agri-food industry. In the first semi-final CIT debated WIT on consumer behaviour as key to food sustainability, while reigning champions UCD took on Dundalk Institute of Technology (DKIT) on the issue of CAP in the second semi-final. 

The winners of the Best Speaker prizes in the quarter-final, two semi-finals and final were respectively Avril O’Driscoll, CIT; Aoife Forde, WIT; Owen Cashman, UCD; and Una Sinnott UCD.

The final debate was moderated by Justin McCarthy, Editor of the Irish Farmers Journal and the judging panel included Niall Browne, CEO of Dawn Meats; Tara McCarthy, CEO of Bord Bia and Peter Garbutt of McDonald’s UK & Ireland.  Throughout the day representatives from the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, BWG Foods, AIB, Bank of Ireland, Ulster Bank, Enterprise Ireland, Teagasc, Agri-Aware and Meat Industry Ireland, participated as judges and moderators, in a very interesting and robust series of qualifying debates.

Dawn Meats, trading as Dunbia in the UK, is celebrating success after being named Food Manufacturer of the Year at the prestigious Food Management Today Industry Awards 2018

Voted Food Manufacturer of the Year by readers of Food Management Today magazine in this year’s industry awards, Dunbia was presented with its award by John Torode, at a celebratory lunch in London attended by 300 industry professionals.

The Food Management Today Industry Awards are an annual celebration of business excellence and are testament to the creativity and innovation of the British food industry 

Marcus Sherreard, Retail Sales Director said: “We are honoured to have been nominated by our peers and are delighted to win the Food Manufacturer of the Year award. I would like to thank all of our staff for their hard work and commitment which has been duly recognised by this achievement.”

Dawn Meats will proudly supply PGI West Country Choice Prime English Beef to feature on the menu for over 120 distinguished guests attending the luncheon at the Lord Mayor of London’s Show on 8th November 2014.

One of the best known annual events in London as well as one of the longest-established, the Lord Mayor’s Show has marched through 799 years of London history and is now bigger than ever before. The modern procession is over three and a half miles long, featuring more than 7,000 people and is cheered on by a crowd of around half a million people and watched live on the BBC by millions more.

A number of Dawn Meats employees will be participating in the parade as part of the contingent from the Worshipful Company of Butchers, one of the seven oldest of the City of London Livery Companies.

Dawn Meats scooped Winner of the ‘Best Ready Meal Product’ at the SuperMeat & Fish Awards 2014 on 10th July 2014 in the Hilton Park Lane, London.

With over 500 industry professionals in attendance each year, these awards have grown to become one of the most prestigious events in the industry calendar. Rewarding excellence in retail success and the manufacturing of meat, poultry and fish products, these awards acknowledge those that push the boundaries and drive the industry forward to greater heights.

Dawn Meats were delighted to accept Winner of the ‘Best Ready Meal Product’ for their product as supplied to Asda, Extra Special Slow Cooked Pork Belly with Asian Glaze.

On May 17th 2014, Dawn Meats entered two teams of four into the Asda Challenge event in aid of Tickled Pink Breast Cancer Care Campaign. 24 teams of four took part in one of the toughest challenges in the UK which elements of the race were based on the SAS selection course.

The challenge was one of the most gruelling charity team events Dawn Meats has ever entered. The race involved teams completing a 10 mile run across Pen-Y-Fan which is part of the Fan Dance route, followed by a 36 mile cycle which was split half way with a 1.5 mile canoe race across Llangors Lake.
 
However, as per Murphy’s Law, there was an unsuspected twist at the end of the race! Just when the teams thought they could keel over and breathe a sigh of relief having passed what they thought was the finish line… cue “The Sickener”. Teams had to each carry a 20kg sack of coal across a further 100 metres to the true finish line.
 
For those that were not too battered and bruised, well deserved prize giving and celebrations took place after the event in the Brecon Rugby Club where it was announced that, Dawn Devils came in 2nd place overall at a time of 05:28:45 and Dawn Dynamos came in 7th overall at a time of 06:25:03. Also worthy of a mention, Dawn Devils managed to pip all teams to the post on the 10 mile run leg of the race by coming in 1st place!
 
Congratulations to both teams on such a fantastic achievement and in aid of such a great cause!

Dawn Meats was crowned winner of the CSR award at the annual JDW supplier conference held on 6th June in Daventry.

This award has recognised and rewarded Dawn Meats for pushing the boundaries and delivering efficiency within the operations of its business through its on-going commitment in sustainability, energy saving and the environment.

Duncan Marsh, Foodservice Account Director of Dawn Meats said “It was a great pleasure to receive this award on behalf of Dawn Meats. It is testament to the hard work and on-going commitment of the whole team who ensure that sustainable practices are continually placed at the heart of our business”.

Dawn Meats lined out with former Munster and Ireland rugby star Alan Quinlan to support the Ronald McDonald House Charity for the launch of an appeal for volunteer cooks and corporate food donors to sign up to support families with sick children by volunteering their time and / or produce.

The RMHC operations depend greatly on the generosity of the public, particularly in giving their time and donating supplies for the house. Dawn Meats has been a long term supporter of charity and is committed to providing fresh red meat for the House.

2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of The Ronald McDonald House in Crumlin. It is in the early stages of a fundraising drive in anticipation of the construction of a 50 bedroom house on the grounds of the new National Children’s Hospital, which is due for completion in 2018. By developing a roster of volunteer cooks and regular food donors it is hoped that the House will become self-sustaining and a seamless support to families caring for sick children.

The second Spanish Irish Business Network St Patricks Day Charity Ball took place on Friday 14th March in Madrid. Aimed at raising awareness about Butterfly Children and raising much needed funds to continue supporting families living with EB (Epidermolysis bullosa), the event for which Dawn Meats was a contributor raised an incredible €30,000 for Debra Ireland and Debra Spain.

Established in 1988 by three families living with EB, Debra is a family and patient led organization that ensures patients get the very best in support and medical care. DEBRA Ireland receives no guaranteed State funding and so fundraising and donations is vital to allow Debra to continue to support patients in dealing with the many challenges of EB as well as providing funding for vital research.

The money raised will be split evenly between Debra Ireland and Debra Spain, half will go directly towards payment of an on the road nurse to help Irelands “butterfly children” to change their bandages, while the other half will go towards the Debra respite home in Marbella.

A team of four from Dawn Cross Hands took part in a gruelling test of strength and stamina in the Lake District on the 19th May 2013. Organised by the Asda Red Meat Team, the challenge involved a 10 mile mountain run, a 40 mile cycle ride with some very steep inclines and a 1 mile canoe across Lake Coniston (complete with bikes).

25 teams participated in the Lakes Challenge and Dawn Meats are proud to have been part of a wider team that raised over £130k for Asda’s Everyman and Tickled Pink cancer charities.

 

Dawn Meats came runners up in the CSR category at the annual JDW supplier conference held in May.

The award was based on the work the group has been involved in on sustainability, energy saving and the environment.

Over 200 of JDW’s top suppliers across all categories were in attendance with only five awards given out on the day.
