Dawn Meats has been awarded 10 Gold Stars at the Great Taste Awards 2014, announced by the Guild of Fine Foods.
Dawn Meats brands Black Angus, Red Hereford and Nature’s Meadow are just some of the products that were recognised by the Guild.
Described as the “Oscars” of the food world and acknowledged as the benchmark for speciality fine food and drink, achieving these stars from the Great Taste Awards validates Dawn Meats products as being exceptional in quality and outstanding in taste.
This year saw over 10,000 entries judged by a 400 strong judging panel of the nation’s most discerning and respected food experts. Only 153 products have been awarded 3-Star gold, including our own Nature’s Meadow French Trimmed Lamb Rack. To receive a 3-Star rating, every judge at each judging session, had to unanimously agree that the food delivered exceptional quality and taste. The other products to achieve Gold Star status were:
- Black Angus Tomahawk Steak – “Handsome looking steak that cuts like butter”
- Red Hereford Bone in Striploin – “Flavour from the fat comes through with a wonderful nuttiness”
- Nature's Meadow Best of Beef Rib Roast – “A gorgeous looking joint of beef with delicious looking golden crisp crust, juicy and tender, a delight to carve. A stunning piece of beef.”
- Tesco Ireland Finest Lamb Loin Chops – “Looks lovely and cuts well. Beautifully tender lamb with lovely delicate lamb flavour and excellent flavour to the fat.”
Dawn Meats scooped Winner of the ‘Best Ready Meal Product’ at the SuperMeat & Fish Awards 2014 on 10th July 2014 in the Hilton Park Lane, London.
With over 500 industry professionals in attendance each year, these awards have grown to become one of the most prestigious events in the industry calendar. Rewarding excellence in retail success and the manufacturing of meat, poultry and fish products, these awards acknowledge those that push the boundaries and drive the industry forward to greater heights.
Dawn Meats were delighted to accept Winner of the ‘Best Ready Meal Product’ for their product as supplied to Asda, Extra Special Slow Cooked Pork Belly with Asian Glaze.

On May 17th 2014, Dawn Meats entered two teams of four into the Asda Challenge event in aid of Tickled Pink Breast Cancer Care Campaign. 24 teams of four took part in one of the toughest challenges in the UK which elements of the race were based on the SAS selection course.

The challenge was one of the most gruelling charity team events Dawn Meats has ever entered. The race involved teams completing a 10 mile run across Pen-Y-Fan which is part of the Fan Dance route, followed by a 36 mile cycle which was split half way with a 1.5 mile canoe race across Llangors Lake.
However, as per Murphy’s Law, there was an unsuspected twist at the end of the race! Just when the teams thought they could keel over and breathe a sigh of relief having passed what they thought was the finish line… cue “The Sickener”. Teams had to each carry a 20kg sack of coal across a further 100 metres to the true finish line.
For those that were not too battered and bruised, well deserved prize giving and celebrations took place after the event in the Brecon Rugby Club where it was announced that, Dawn Devils came in 2nd place overall at a time of 05:28:45 and Dawn Dynamos came in 7th overall at a time of 06:25:03. Also worthy of a mention, Dawn Devils managed to pip all teams to the post on the 10 mile run leg of the race by coming in 1st place!

Dawn Meats was crowned winner of the CSR award at the annual JDW supplier conference held on 6th June in Daventry.
This award has recognised and rewarded Dawn Meats for pushing the boundaries and delivering efficiency within the operations of its business through its on-going commitment in sustainability, energy saving and the environment.

Dawn Meats recently attended the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention in Orlando, Florida, USA where it was recognized at the ‘Best of Sustainable Supply’ (BoSS) awards as the Global Winner in the Economics category and a finalist in the Water use category.
Dawn Meats has been named in McDonald’s “2014 Best of Sustainable Supply” global report, which highlights how suppliers achieve results by identifying opportunities and applying sustainable solutions in diverse places across the world. More than 600 entries were submitted, with Dawn Meats earning a prestigious place alongside 9 other global winning projects. McDonald’s leadership and external subject matter experts recognized Dawn Meats for sustainability leadership in the Economics and Water use categories. This was further enhanced by the confirmation of Dawn Meats as the Global winner in the Economics category. Dawn Meats supplies beef products to 3 major markets in the McDonald’s system in Europe and has been a system supplier for more than 25 years.

The Grocer Food & Drink Awards Own Label 2014 took place on Friday 16th May 2014 at The Hilton Park Lane, London. With an excess of 1,000 contenders entering into the awards this year it was a clear reflection of the growing importance of own label to retailers. Over 346 products were shortlisted, competing across 74 categories, it was by far the toughest competition to date. Winners were selected through a rigorous 2 stage judging process that included a combination of consumer panels and expert industry judges.
Winner of the Traditional Chilled Ready Meals Category 2014 was awarded to Tesco Chipotle Chilli Pulled Pork as supplied by Dawn Meats. Packed with flavour and easy to prepare, this product is bang on trend with the recent explosion in popularity of American-style street food and in particular pulled/shredded meats.
The product was up against strong competition from 5 other products, including;
• The Co-operative Chipotle Pulled Pork and Potato Bake (Greencore Prepared Meals)
• Aldi Ready to Cook Chicken Breast with Hunters BBQ Sauce (2 Sisters Food Group)
• Marks & Spencer Boneless Beef Ribs with BBQ Sauce (Dawn Meats)
• Asda Chosen by You Hunters Chicken (Laila’s Fine Foods)
• Tesco Slow Cooked BBQ Beef Short Ribs (Kepak - Cork)
Congratulations to everyone involved in the development of this product, achieving such high standards in bringing this product to the retail market has been not only awarded and recognised by the consumers but by industry alike.
Dawn Meats lined out with former Munster and Ireland rugby star Alan Quinlan to support the Ronald McDonald House Charity for the launch of an appeal for volunteer cooks and corporate food donors to sign up to support families with sick children by volunteering their time and / or produce.
The RMHC operations depend greatly on the generosity of the public, particularly in giving their time and donating supplies for the house. Dawn Meats has been a long term supporter of charity and is committed to providing fresh red meat for the House.
2014 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of The Ronald McDonald House in Crumlin. It is in the early stages of a fundraising drive in anticipation of the construction of a 50 bedroom house on the grounds of the new National Children’s Hospital, which is due for completion in 2018. By developing a roster of volunteer cooks and regular food donors it is hoped that the House will become self-sustaining and a seamless support to families caring for sick children.

The second Spanish Irish Business Network St Patricks Day Charity Ball took place on Friday 14th March in Madrid. Aimed at raising awareness about Butterfly Children and raising much needed funds to continue supporting families living with EB (Epidermolysis bullosa), the event for which Dawn Meats was a contributor raised an incredible €30,000 for Debra Ireland and Debra Spain.
Established in 1988 by three families living with EB, Debra is a family and patient led organization that ensures patients get the very best in support and medical care. DEBRA Ireland receives no guaranteed State funding and so fundraising and donations is vital to allow Debra to continue to support patients in dealing with the many challenges of EB as well as providing funding for vital research.
The money raised will be split evenly between Debra Ireland and Debra Spain, half will go directly towards payment of an on the road nurse to help Irelands “butterfly children” to change their bandages, while the other half will go towards the Debra respite home in Marbella.

Dawn Meats has won the award for ‘Environmental Impact’ at the South West Wales Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2014, run in association with the University of South Wales.
This environmental award recognises Dawn Meats as a pioneer in the environmental sustainability of agriculture and food processing for its development and implementation of a robust sustainability programme at its retail packing facility in Cross Hands, Wales.
Dawn Meats introduced this programme to its retail packing facility in an attempt to reduce water and energy consumption by 20% in 2015. The project results exceeded both of these targets by the end of 2013, delivering a 65% reduction in water consumption and a 50% reduction in energy consumption.
Commenting on the awards, Michelle White, from Dawn Meats, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to have won the Environmental Impact Award at the South Wales Chamber of Commerce Awards. The consequences of climate change for our planet are far-reaching, impacting on water resources, agriculture and public health, and we recognise that we have a responsibility to ensure that we function as sustainably as possible. Investment in equipment, coupled with the hard work of our staff, has ensured that we surpassed our water and energy targets and, while there is still more work to be done in this area, we’re delighted to have received this award in recognition of our achievements this far.”
Dawn Meats has accepted its 4th sustainability award in three weeks when it was recognised with the Process Award at the IBEC Environment Awards 2013 on November 29th. This latest award further cements Dawn Meats’ position as Ireland’s most sustainable meat processor.
The Process Award recognises Dawn Meats as a pioneer in the development and implementation of sustainable production solutions. Dawn Meats’ aim was to reduce fossil fuel use by 80% at one of its major meat processing plants using superconducting heat recovery technology (originally conceived by NASA scientists) to produce hot water.
The project delivered a thermal efficiency improvement of 90% at its Ballyhaunis plant and over 50% at other facilities. The success of the project has allowed Dawn Meats to increase its corporate target for energy efficiency from 20% to 40%. This win follows hot on the heels of three other sustainability awards in as many weeks, including:
- SEAI Innovation Award – Dawn Meats’ energy efficiency solution beat Microsoft and a range of other leading edge companies to claim the top prize for its heat recovery solution
- Bord Bia’s Origin Green’s overall Sustainability Award - for saving up to 60 million litres of water and reducing Dawn Meats’ carbon footprint by 3,000 tonnes in one year
- The UK’s prestigious Green Apple Environmental Award. Dawn Meats competed with over 500 nominations in the UK and was named National Green Champion (Ireland) – of which there is just one per country
