Dawn Meats Host Swedish Chefs

Monday, 22 September 2014 12:36

Dawn Meats recently hosted a visit of five celebrity and Michelin-starred Swedish Chefs for a tour of its facilities in Grannagh, Waterford.

The visit was a Bord Bia initiative that unites Michelin star and well known chefs who promote or use Irish beef in high-end restaurants in Europe and further afield.

The visit, with a primary focus on emphasising the extremely high standards that exist in Irish beef production included; a comprehensive tour of the production plant and facilities in Grannagh, an Origin Green presentation, a steak selection and cooking session and a visit to a local beef farm.

Visiting Dawn Meats gave the Swedish chefs the opportunity to look at every stage of the meat production process, seeing what is involved in the preparation of the beef before it reaches their restaurants. Assured of the highest quality and seeing first-hand that the meat lives up to the standards they aspire to in their restaurants, the chefs acknowledged that the trip reaffirmed their commitment to purchasing quality Irish beef.

Richard Booth of Dawn Meats, said: “Welcoming these culinary experts to our plant facilities here in Grannagh is not only a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the high standards at which we operate and prove the quality of our Irish beef, but to strengthen our relationships with these professionals who are looking to maintain the highest culinary standards possible”.

Congratulations to Denise Slevin, Group Procurement, Dawn Meats who was awarded an Advanced Diploma and Professional Diploma in Procurement & Supply having completed the full suite of CIPS programmes over three years.

Denise Slevin, Group Procurement, Dawn Meats, said “I stayed focused and determined right the way through, and really enjoyed every aspect of the course. Each level overlapped with previous modules and gave me ever increasing knowledge and understanding of the procurement and supply function. I still have the CIPS books within easy reach of my office desk, as they consistently provide me with a solid reference point”.

A fantastic achievement, congratulations once again to Denise on persevering with such determination, commitment and consistency throughout the three year course and in achieving such a prestigious accolade.

On May 17th 2014, Dawn Meats entered two teams of four into the Asda Challenge event in aid of Tickled Pink Breast Cancer Care Campaign. 24 teams of four took part in one of the toughest challenges in the UK which elements of the race were based on the SAS selection course.

Dawn Devils: Marcus Sherreard, Kristian Gabrielsen, Renatas Ptytnikas and Robert Wilcox
Dawn Dynamos: Tim Higgins, David Shapland, Ceri Davies and David Angell

The challenge was one of the most gruelling charity team events Dawn Meats has ever entered. The race involved teams completing a 10 mile run across Pen-Y-Fan which is part of the Fan Dance route, followed by a 36 mile cycle which was split half way with a 1.5 mile canoe race across Llangors Lake.

However, as per Murphy’s Law, there was an unsuspected twist at the end of the race! Just when the teams thought they could keel over and breathe a sigh of relief having passed what they thought was the finish line… cue “The Sickener”. Teams had to each carry a 20kg sack of coal across a further 100 metres to the true finish line.

For those that were not too battered and bruised, well deserved prize giving and celebrations took place after the event in the Brecon Rugby Club where it was announced that, Dawn Devils came in 2nd place overall at a time of 05:28:45 and Dawn Dynamos came in 7th overall at a time of 06:25:03. Also worthy of a mention, Dawn Devils managed to pip all teams to the post on the 10 mile run leg of the race by coming in 1st place!

Congratulations to both teams on such a fantastic achievement and in aid of such a great cause!
